A tooth that has darkened after injury should be assessed before assuming routine whitening is the right solution.

Whitening does not predictably change the shade of existing tooth-coloured restorations in the same way it changes natural teeth. We assess visible restorations before treatment so you can understand the possibility of a shade mismatch. Plan the colour of visible restorations around any intended whitening. Bleaching can lighten natural teeth while leaving an existing crown or veneer unchanged, creating a mismatch.

Temporary tooth sensitivity and gum irritation can occur during whitening. Research shows that sensitivity is common early in treatment, although the risk varies with the product and exposure. Existing cavities, gum problems and sensitivity are assessed before treatment. Strong or persistent symptoms need a review of the whitening plan.

The result varies with the type of stain, habits and maintenance. It is not a permanent colour guarantee. We can discuss how to maintain the result and when further whitening may be appropriate. There is no dependable single duration for everyone. Record the starting shade and review the result before repeating treatment; repeated gel use should follow the instructions for that product, rather than chasing an arbitrary number of shades.

Whitening toothpaste mainly removes surface stains and does not have the same effect as peroxide-based bleaching. Abrasiveness and existing sensitivity matter; a more abrasive toothpaste is not automatically better for your teeth.

If both treatments are being considered, discuss the sequence before starting. The final restoration needs a planned shade, and its colour will not automatically change if you whiten your natural teeth later. The concentrations are not directly interchangeable: carbamide peroxide releases roughly one-third of its concentration as hydrogen peroxide. The product, contact time and planned restoration all matter when sequencing whitening and bonding.
